Dr. Tom Farrell devoted his life to young people. Over more than fifty years, he served as a teacher, coach, and school superintendent in Maine, Colorado, and Taiwan. His belief was simple: a true leader lifts others up, helping them see their own value and potential. When Tom passed away in March 2024, the Farrell family heard from hundreds of former students, athletes, and colleagues who spoke of the lasting impact he had on their lives. His style of leadership was contagious—by building up others, he inspired them to become leaders themselves.
The Future Leaders of Maine Foundation was created to carry forward Dr. Farrell’s legacy of leadership, service, and giving. Our mission is to support Maine’s next generation of leaders by:
Each year, Maine high school seniors entering the University of Maine are invited to apply for the Tom Farrell Future Leaders of Maine Scholarship, which covers full in-state tuition. Applicants are chosen not only for academic promise, but also for demonstrating Tom’s model of leadership: treating others with compassion, striving to be the best version of themselves, and giving back to their communities.
We believe Maine’s future will be shaped by leaders who serve with courage, compassion, and integrity. By investing in young people today, we ensure that tomorrow’s Maine communities—and the world beyond—will be stronger, kinder, and better led.
We are working toward a $400,000 endowment that will permanently fund scholarships and leadership programs for Maine students. Every gift, large or small, brings us closer to ensuring that Dr. Farrell’s legacy continues to inspire leaders for generations.
